Usnea: the most powerful natural antibiotic

Usnea (Usneta barbata), often called Old Man's Beard or Angi Angi, is a grey-green lichen that hangs from tree branches, especially in clean, unpolluted forests. While it may look like moss, usnea is actually a combination of algae and fungus living symbiotically. Used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine across the world, usnea is an extraordinary remedy rich in bioactive compounds.
What makes it so special? Usnea contains usnic acid, which has strong antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It's especially good against the types of bacteria that cause strep throat, bronchitis, and infected cuts. It's also great for supporting the immune system when you feel like you're coming down with something. Basically, it's one of those plants you want to have in your first-aid natural kit.
Usnea grows slowly and plays an important role in forest ecosystems, so harvesting it should be done with care. Never remove it from living trees! Instead, look for freshly fallen branches, especially after a storm.
To identify usnea, gently pull a strand apart between your fingers. The outer green layer will separate and reveal a white, stretchy inner core, like a tiny elastic thread. Usnea is elastic, other lichens aren't.
Usnea tincture

Tinctures are herbal preparations made with food-grade alcohol, which is ideal for extracting both the water and alcohol-soluble compounds in plants. One of the best ways to use the medicinal benefits of usnea is to make a tincture:
- Gather your usnea, clean it gently, and chop it if fresh. If using dried lichen, lightly crush it to increase the surface area.
- Fill a clean glass jar halfway with the plant material, then completely cover it with strong alcohol (vodka works great).
- Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place for 4 to 6 weeks.
- Shake it gently every few days.
- Once ready, strain the liquid and transfer it into a dropper bottle. Label and store away from direct sunlight.
How to use it:
- Feeling unwell - take 3-4 drops in water or juice, 3 to 5 times a day, up to three weeks. Start with a small dose and gradually increase it as needed. It is best to take usnea tincture on an empty stomach. Use for short periods only!
- Sore throat - use the tincture as a gargle by adding a few drops to warm water and rinsing your mouth and throat. This will help to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.
- Skin - apply directly to minor cuts or fungal skin issues like athlete's foot.
- Wounds - add it to homemade healing sprays.
Note: The tincture is NOT meant for daily or preventative use - it's intended only for times when you're already feeling unwell. Because of its high potency, usnea isn't suited for everyday or long-term use either.
Always consult with a practitioner if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
