The secret ingredient for smooth, hydrated and moisturised skin

Irish moss seaweed

Chondrus crispus (also known as Irish moss, Carrageen moss or red algae) is a nutrient-rich seaweed that has been harvested by humans for hundreds of years. Its attractive red colour undoubtedly encouraged early coastal residents to use it for food and later for its medicinal properties.

Irish moss contains every mineral needed for human health, including respectable levels of calcium, iron, zinc, sodium, iodine, and potassium. It also contains appreciable levels of microminerals such as magnesium, manganese, and copper.

Although it’s low in fat (about 3%), Irish moss is one of the few non-animal sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which promotes good brain and cardiovascular health. It’s a valuable source of Vitamin B2 too.

Since the early 1800 Irish doctors have prescribed Carrageen jelly or broth to treat intestinal disorders, ulcers, sore throats, coughs, and other respiratory ailments. Its mucilaginous properties helped to soothe these and similar maladies that caused inflammation and irritation of mucous membranes.

Skin and body care are other applications where the soothing properties of Irish moss are appreciated. Irish moss contains a compound known as carrageenan (hence the name Carrageen moss, from the Gaelic word ‘cairgain’, which translates simply as ‘herb’). Carrageenan forms a flexible film on the skin that offers defence against environmental stressors.

Rich in the potent antioxidants zeaxanthin and lutein, as well as natural polysaccharides, peptides, and amino acids, Irish moss helps the skin to stay hydrated, reduce wrinkles, tighten facial pores, reduce dark spots, plump up fine lines, and restore skin’s suppleness and elasticity.

For our products we slowly infuse organically wild harvested Irish moss in organic Macadamia oil and use as a hero ingredient in the Rise & Shine Antioxidant Balm and the Flow & Glow Dry Oil. Our favourite ingredient, we must confess!
