Meet astaxanthin – Nature’s most powerful antioxidant
It's around 6000 times more effective at fighting free radicals than vitamin C, 500 times more powerful than vitamin E.
Chemically, astaxanthin belongs to the oil-soluble carotenoid group, specifically to the xanthophylls. In natural surroundings, it can be found in photosynthetic organisms like bacteria, algae and yeasts. The highest concentrations of natural astaxanthin can be accumulated from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. When the algae is stressed by a lack of nutrients, increased salinity, or excessive sunshine, it produces astaxanthin.
Fun fact: flamingos and shrimp are both pink from eating algae containing this carotenoid pigment.
As a skincare ingredient astaxanthin acts as a uniquely broad-spectrum antioxidant capable of protecting the skin from ultraviolet damage, without blocking out vitamin D. It improves skin elasticity and moisture content and promotes a healthy-looking glow.
